A Vaccine For Cat Allergies: Here Is The Latest

Hey, cats. You know how about 10% of the humans in the U.S. Start coughing, wheezing, sneezing, and getting rashes and stuffy noses around you? Well, it's not them. It's you. They are allergic to you.

This problem has motivated HypoPet AG, a Swiss-based company, to develop the HypoCat vaccine for that. But the vaccine isn't for them. It's for you.

Most often, the problem isn't exactly you. It's actually Fel d 1. No, Fel d 1 is not something on World of Warcraft. That would be a Fel Mint Green paint vial. And it is not a musical act. That would be Adele or Bell Biv DeVoe. Fel d 1 is a protein in your saliva and skin secretions that frequently generates the allergic reaction seen in humans.

What makes matters worse is that you have this problem licked. Maybe it's the lack of hair gel and a brush, but you seem to lick yourself quite often. This licking then spreads Fel d 1 all over your fur. Then, when you shed your fur, you effectively spread this protein everywhere you go. That's what can make it so difficult for some humans to be around you.

I know, I know, you may not want humans around you. After all, they may dress you up like a sailor or watch you while you pee. But many humans do like being around you, even if you may be plotting their demise, as I have detailed previously for Forbes.

That's why humans are trying to develop a vaccine for cat allergies. Did you read that publication in the recent issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology? No, not the one about the long-term safety and pharmacodynamics of mepolizumab in children with severe asthma with an eosinophilic phenotype. I know how much you cats like pharmacodynamics. Rather, I'm referring to the publication about a set of studies that included over fifty of your comrades (or catrades), mice, human blood, and the HypoCat vaccine.

In the studies, your catrades received three doses of HypoCat over nine weeks with some getting a booster shot six months later. The vaccinations involved injections into your catrades' hind legs. The injections may have involved some meowches but otherwise were fairly well-tolerated. No strange side effects. No Cat Daddy Dances.

After delivering the vaccinations, the researchers subsequently detected increased levels of antibodies to Fel d 1 in your catrades' blood. They (the researchers and not the cats) also found that these antibodies seemed to neutralize the activity of Fel d 1 when they were mixed together in the laboratory. Moreover, your catrades who got the vaccine tended to have lower levels of Fel d 1 in their saliva and tears. Finally, when samples from your catrades who got the vaccine were mixed with blood from humans with cat allergies, there was less allergy-related chemical reactions than usual.

In a statement, Dr. Gary Jennings, CEO of HypoPet AG, said, "We are very pleased to publish this data which shows our HypoCat vaccine is able to produce high levels of antibodies in cats and that these antibodies can bind and neutralize the Fel d 1 allergen produced by the animals." He added, "We are pressing ahead with registration studies and discussions with European and U.S regulators with the hope of bringing this much-needed product to the market."

Of note, Jennings, to my knowledge, is a human and not a cat.

Of course, this latest set of studies don't completely prove that humans won't continue to sneeze, cough, wheeze, and develop rashes around you if you get vaccinated. We'll have to see what happens when humans with documented cat allergies are exposed to your catrades who have gotten the vaccine. But these findings are promising.

If you are worried about what neutralizing your Fel d 1 protein may do to you, it isn't clear what purposes Fel d 1 may serve you. The hope is that Fel d 1 is like bad body odor or the Macarena. It exists. It bothers a number of humans. But getting rid of it doesn't bother you. Unless, of course, you feel that cat allergies are the one thing preventing humans from dressing you up as a sailor.

King Soopers Breaks Ground On $36.4 Million Grocery In Booming Colorado Springs Location

King Soopers is heading to Colorado Springs' far north side — just like thousands of homeowners have done over the last 20 to 30 years.

The grocery chain broke ground Tuesday on its 12th store in the Pikes Peak region, which will anchor a shopping center to be built southwest of Colorado 83 and North Gate Boulevard as part of the 1,500-acre Flying Horse development.

The roughly 118,000-square-foot store, which will have a $36.4 million price tag that includes construction and land costs, will open in about a year, possibly in January 2025, said Joe Kelley, King Soopers' president.

A series of drawings show different views of a new King Soopers grocery to be built southwest of Colorado 83 and North Gate Boulevard on Colorado Springs' far north side. King Soopers broke ground on the project Tuesday and expects the store open in about a year.

The Flying Horse store will be a larger-format, marketplace store — about twice the size of King Soopers' traditional groceries. Marketplace stores sell clothing, dinnerware, small appliances and other items to go with full lines of groceries; amenities will include a Starbucks, a Murray's cheese shop, a fuel station and a pharmacy with a drive-thru.

"We've always been fans of Colorado Springs and we have some terrific stores down here already," Kelley said after a ceremonial groundbreaking on a cold and cloudy afternoon. "With the population growth, this is a perfect location for us. We have beautiful neighborhoods here. We think that the area is underserved by grocery stores and we're excited to get this one open."

King Soopers' Flying Horse store effectively will fill a hole in the grocery chain's coverage area; its nearest stores are 5½ miles to the southeast in the Briargate area and about 10 miles north in Monument.

The new store will serve Flying Horse — an upscale project developed over the last two decades by Springs-based Classic Cos. — and likely will attract shoppers from areas such as nearby Northgate, The Farm and unincorporated Black Forest.

The shopping center at Colorado 83 and North Gate Boulevard in Flying Horse is being developed by the Arizona-based Barclay Group, which is talking with other potential users at the project that likely will include restaurants, stores and service-oriented businesses.

King Soopers, which is part of the Ohio-based Kroger chain, has 10 stores in Colorado Springs and El Paso County; an 11th is set to open Jan. 24 in unincorporated Falcon as the anchor of the Falcon Marketplace shopping center, northwest of Woodmen and Meridian roads. City Market, also part of Kroger, has a store in Woodland Park, west of the Springs.

Kroger and Albertsons, the parent company of grocery rival Safeway, announced their planned merger in October 2022. In September of this year, the two grocery chains announced they would sell more than 400 stores nationwide — including 52 in Colorado — as part of their merger and as they seek approval from federal regulators. None of those 52 stores to be sold in Colorado are expected to be King Soopers stores, a Kroger spokeswoman said at the time the planned sale of stores was announced.

The Flying Horse store won't be King Soopers' last.

The chain expects to break ground next year on a store in Fountain, south of the Springs, that's also expected to open in 2025.

That store will anchor the Mesa Ridge Marketplace shopping center, which will be built southeast of Mesa Ridge Parkway and Syracuse Street. Mesa Ridge Marketplace is being developed by Arizona-based Evergreen Devco as part of the real estate company's joint venture with a California group.

Evergreen Devco also developed Falcon Marketplace, where Soopers opens next month, and the Claremont Ranch Marketplace at Marksheffel Road and Constitution Avenue, where King Soopers opened a store in 2017.

Boulder Shooting: Gunman Kills 10 At King Soopers Grocery Store

Emergency responders led people in the area to safety

A gunman has killed 10 people, including a police officer, following an hours-long stand-off at a grocery store in the US state of Colorado.

The attack in Boulder ended with police detaining an injured suspect at the King Soopers market.

The shooting was live-streamed by witnesses and broadcast on YouTube.

Among the dead was 51-year-old Eric Talley, who was the first police officer to respond to the shooting.

"This is a tragedy and a nightmare for Boulder County," the area's district attorney, Michael Dougherty, said.

"These were people going about their day, doing their shopping. I promise the victims and the people of the state of Colorado that we will secure justice."

No other details have been released about the nine other victims or a motive for the attack.

The grocery store is located in a busy shopping plaza in Boulder, a north-central Colorado city about 30 miles (50km) away from the state capital of Denver.

The supermarket attack comes less than a week after a mass shooting that left eight dead, including six Asian women, at three spas in Atlanta.

What do we know about the shooting?

The incident began at about 14:30 local time (20:30 GMT) on Monday when the suspect entered the supermarket and began firing.

Shoppers and employees of the store said they had to dive for cover or run to safety as the shooting unfolded.

Some of the stand-off was captured on camera by a passer-by, showing victims near the grocery store.

"I don't know what's going on... I heard gunshots, someone's down," the cameraman shouts. "There's an active shooter, get away".

Gunshots can be heard as he runs away from the shop.

The video continues, with police arriving on the scene and surrounding the market.

The Boulder police department later warned people to avoid the area and told them not to "broadcast on social media any tactical information you might see".

"We were at the checkout, and shots just started going off," said Sarah Moonshadow, a customer caught up in the shooting with her son Nicholas.

She told Reuters she had tried to help one of the victims lying on the pavement outside the store, but her son pulled her away saying "we have to go".

"I couldn't help anybody," she said.

Ryan Borowski, who was also inside the store, told CNN he could not believe what had happened in his town: "This feels like the safest spot in America, and I just nearly got killed for getting a soda and a bag of chips."

Eyewitnesses said the suspect was armed with a rifle. A police source told CNN it was an AR-15 style rifle, a semi-automatic gun that has been used in several mass shootings across the US.

Aerial footage later showed a handcuffed, shirtless man with an apparent injury to his leg being put onto a stretcher for treatment. Authorities did not say whether he was the suspect or not.

Speaking at a press conference, Boulder police chief Maris Herold confirmed that a suspect was in custody and was receiving hospital treatment. "I want to reassure the community that they are safe," she said.

Ms Herold named the officer killed as Eric Talley, a father of seven who had been with the Boulder Police Department since 2010.

"The heroic action of this officer when he responded to the scene... Phone calls of shots fired in the area and a phone call about a possible person with a patrol rifle," she said.

Ms Herold did not provide further details about the shooting, but said that the investigation was "very complex" and would take "no less than five days to complete".

The names of the other victims will not be released until relatives have been informed.

What's been the reaction?

"Today we saw the face of evil. I am grieving with my community and all Coloradans," tweeted Colorado Governor Jared Polis.

The supermarket shooting was the seventh mass killing so far this year following a lull in mass killings during the pandemic last year, according to a database compiled by the Associated Press (AP), USA Today and Northeastern University. The database defines mass killings as four or more dead.

It has already led to renewed calls for tighter gun controls in the US, a starkly divisive issue that has seen little in the way of change over the years despite hundreds of mass shootings.

Former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, a gun control advocate who was seriously injured in a mass shooting in 2011, said: "It's been 10 years and countless communities have faced something similar... This is not normal."

Responding to the news, US Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said on Twitter: "This Senate must and will move forward on legislation to help stop the epidemic of gun violence."

President Joe Biden, who has been briefed about the latest attack, said last month he would be recommending tougher legislation to ensure background checks on anyone wishing to purchase a firearm.

Freshman Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, a staunch defender of gun rights, tweeted that she was "praying for the police, first responders, and those affected by this tragedy".

The right to bear arms is protected by the Second Amendment to the US constitution and is staunchly defended by many conservatives, including ex-president Donald Trump.

The state of Colorado has seen a number of mass shootings over the last few decades, including the 1999 Columbine High School attack that left 12 students and a teacher dead and the 2012 attack at a cinema in Aurora that killed 12 people.
