WASHINGTON (7News) — If you are like millions of Americans, the first few months of the year offer an ideal time to focus on your fitness. But what steps can you take to help achieve those health-related goals? Here to provide some tips is Dr. Rhonda Randall, chief medical officer for UnitedHealthcare's commercial business.
A recent UnitedHealthcare survey found that more than half of Americans this year planned to make a New Year's resolution to improve their health, with losing weight, exercising more and improving mental health ranking as the most common pledges. A good place to begin is with your health plan benefits. With many people starting a new health plan at the beginning of the year, it's a great time to see what resources may be available to help you. Some people may think about their health plan when they have an injury or illness, but your health plan may help prevent issues before they start. While health plans vary, many cover annual physical exams and numerous preventive screenings at no additional cost, including for colon cancer, mammograms and some vaccinations. It is a good idea to first start with your primary care physician, and if you don't currently have a primary care professional, now is a great time to find one – either in person or virtually.
Virtual care has surged in popularity in recent years with 71% of Americans reporting that they're interested in continuing to use virtual care to access medical services. That's because these help people remotely address everything from urgent care issues to primary care to behavioral health needs. These visits may help treat some of the same conditions that you once went to the ER or urgent care for, and typically offer a more convenient and affordable alternative. One way for people to help offset their deductible is to tap into health engagement programs, which may enable members to earn financial incentives that can be used to pay for medical care. For instance, the UnitedHealthcare Rewards program enables eligible members to earn hundreds of dollars per year for completing various daily and one-time healthy activities, such as getting a flu shot, completing an annual physical, or walking 5,000 steps each day.
The UnitedHealthcare study found that while 90% of employees have access to well-being programs through their employer, only 23% use them so UnitedHealthcare recommends looking into what your employer offers. Connecting with your Primary care physician or a mental health professional can create a confidential environment where you can freely express thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment. This interaction fosters self-awareness and a deeper understanding of oneself. Primary care physicians and mental health professionals can offer valuable insights, coping strategies, and evidence-based interventions customized to individual needs. When on campus, PUSH should be the initial contact unless it is of an emergency nature (life-threatening). When seen by a PUSH provider, your deductible is waived.
There will be a $15 co-pay for some PUSH services such as x-rays, physical therapy, and other ancillary services. Laboratory services constitute a 10% co-insurance of services rendered.
A $200 deductible for in-network preferred providers and a $400 deductible for out-of-network providers will apply to all services outside PUSH.
Preventive care services are only covered if performed by an United Healthcare in-network provider.
LabCorp, located in PUSH is in the United Healthcare network, and all preferred network coverage will apply.
The Purdue University Pharmacy (PUP) is the preferred pharmacy of the plan. Insured students and their insured dependents can have prescriptions filled at the pharmacy located in RHPH building, Room 118. A $10 copay for Tier 1 drugs, $20 copay for Tier 2 and Tier 3 drugs and a $50 copay for Tier 4 drugs applies to each covered prescription at PUP.
